Bringing Back the Blog!

After a VERY long hiatus I am bringing back the blog! Much has changed in the 4+ years since my last post.

Education has seen a drastic shift. We went through a global pandemic with forced distance learning for all students in K-12. Teachers moved online in an instant. They didn’t have time to prep or know which way was up. Students, teachers, and parents had to navigate a virtual world while the physical world felt like it was falling apart.

Politics had always been embedded in education. The COVID-19 pandemic made them louder and longer-lasting. “E-Learning” became a political talking point for school board elections. Keeping kids online is harmful vs the virus is harmful. Masking kids in schools is harmful vs everyone could get sick. The politics extended to now battles over books, curriculum, and louder “conversations” about standards. States are at odds with each other over what history should be taught, how it should be taught, and what the term “parents rights” means to individual communities.

Globally, we have gone through a lot.

Personally, we have gone through a lot. I am no exception. I changed careers and am now a full-time Assistant Professor of Education at College of DuPage. It is the largest community college in Illinois, serving over 20,000 students. I am the third member of the Education department. I’m beyond excited to have joined this amazing community! Additionally, I live in the community college district. I now am giving back to the community that welcomed me in back in 2019.

As i bring back my blog, I bring with it a new focus. My posts will continue to be education-based, but inspiration shall come from my students. Our conversations, their questions, and their experiences are the foundation of this blog. I’ll expand on lessons, activities, and tools they discover and I share.

I’m excited to bring this space back and have a virtual sharing place. I’m also excited to share with my students the power of reflection and professional growth on your teaching over the years.
